Mashuma has been fighting discrimination for years. She believes in the inner goodness of people and thinks they only discriminate because of ignorance. Once she worked in a hospital and a white patient always looked down on her. She had to hook up a television for him, and he only said unkind things to her. It was ironic, because that patient was actually alcoholic. His doctor had warned him to stay away from alcohol for years, but he finally got a sickness in his liver. Mashuma was much stronger and kinder than he was. She finally convinced him that she was a good person, and he stopped looking down on her. She felt she helped someone clean out their spirit that day.
