Episode Notes

Good morning, Les.
Good morning, Ed. How are you?
I'm great. And you?
I'm really busy. I've got a big project I'm working on.
Oh, what are you working on?
Flashcards?
Flash cards? Like flashcards for classroom usage?
Well, you know, I do some flashcards for for classroom usage. I got one here. Actually, this is one that I printed offline or online. M very nice. Very nice.
It's good for kids, but use it in my adult classes a bit too.
Using it for for what? Like role play or Q&A or what?
I I want to move up to role play sooner or later, but it's a basic Q&A so they can talk about a third person, you know, his and her and he and she.
Yeah.
Yeah. Excellent. So, you'd say like What what what are her hobbies? Her hobbies are
hiking, shopping, and
and then what does she do on Friday night,
right? Yeah. So, that that card uh basic info plus weekly schedule.
A little weekly schedule, basic info, and jobs. You know, jobs is a hard one.
What do you do? What she do?
Yeah. Yeah.
It's It's a non-intuitive question.
And also, if you don't know what it means, it doesn't mean anything. What do you do? It's the most generic sounding question ever. What do you do?
That's exactly what I'm doing.
But you said you're working on a big project. What kind of project?
Well, uh, I'm trying to kill two birds with one stone.
Okay.
My son, my son has some time and so I'm encouraging him to take an English test. Okay.
Right.
He needs to learn a lot of vocabulary. So, I'm making an online flashcard system for him.
So, the flash cards are on the computer.
They're on the computer. And because they're not physical, they're not paper, I can put sound and music in there. I can put words in there. So, it's an audio flashcard,
right?
Very good. Very good.
I'm going to pick that out and I'm going to put it on my website for my students to use later. So that's the the two birds with one stone. It's for your son's lessons study and for your students.
That's right. That's right.
If it's so online digital flashcards. So is it like a like a PowerPoint or like what kind of uh what the system look like?
You're going to get this page and then you're going to say, "Show me a card." And the card pops up. It's a rectangular box with a button. Play the audio. And you'll get a word. Play the audio. and you'll get a sentence using the word
and you got to say the word in the other language. So if you're learning the word in Japanese, you hear the English word and you say the Japanese or the other way around.
You flip to the other side of the card and then you give yourself a rating. That was easy, that was medium, that was difficult.
Right. Right. Right.
And based on what you rate it, the flashcard system decides, I'm going to show the card to you again or no, no, no, you aren't going to see this card. again for 3 months.
Sounds similar to a kanji study app I used for a while where every time you you got a an answer wrong, it would put the card back into the deck and then you'd see it again until you got it right two in a row or something like that.
That's right. That's right.
A little bit of
I don't remember. Years ago when I was looking when I first got my smartphone, I was looking for um Oh, how did I find it? Meaning that So there there's two meanings there. How did I find it? I looked it up online and picked a good one. How did I find it? How did I enjoy it? What what I think of it? I really liked it. Um compared with just using a textbook where
you go through them one by one and whether you have whether they're in your mind or not, whether you've memorized them, whe whether you'll use them is uh up to you to figure out. And so you just kind of go through them in order and you're done. with that. It allowed you, as I said, to the ones you missed the first time around, it will show you again until you get them.
So, it it the the annoying thing was there was always one I could never get for whatever reason. There'd be a set of 15 or 20. I'd get all of them. There'd be one it would just keep popping back up and then there were no more because I'd done them all. So, then that one would just keep popping up and I and I still couldn't get it and I'd be frustrated. But, no, I like that. Yeah. So, if you're making that kind of system, That's That's awesome.
Yeah, I'm I'm working on it. It should be done in a week or two.
And when you're done, let me know and I'll send my students there as well cuz they uh they like your website, too.
Hey, thanks a lot. I will do that.
Excellent. All right, back to work.
I gotta get to work. Okay, thanks a lot. Take care.
See you there.
