Episode Notes
Hey, good morning, Ed.
How you doing, sir?
I'm I'm really doing good today. Today's a good day. What about you?
Same here. It's uh not hot, not cold, just perfect. Um so, I was just I was thinking about music. Students are always asking me about music. Um I listen to music all day, every day. Like the minute I wake up until the minute I go to bed, I'm listening to music.
Okay.
And I listen
You're like my wife.
Oh, yeah.
She turns on the radio. Yeah. Yeah.
And she keeps it on all day long until she goes to bed.
Yeah. How about you?
Yeah.
No, I'm the opposite. I got a story for you.
Okay.
Um, when I was in my 20s, I used to do a lot of mountain climbing and I often Yeah, I loved it. I often found myself driving to the mountains alone.
Okay.
It's a 5-hour drive from Edmonton to the mountains anywhere. Yeah. And I do that every weekend and I'd get in the car and turn on the tunes and I'd be rolling down the highway and after two or three hours of listening to my favorite music and thinking about climbing.
Yeah.
I'd be exhausted and then I'd turn out the music and I realized after about one or two years that the music was making me tired
because you were dancing along to it. Why? What was making you tired
in the car? I was I I I just Music is emotional.
Yeah. The emotion is infectious. I feel the emotion. I ramp it up.
Yeah.
But I can't do that for too long. And I' I'd be doing this for two or three hours and then I'd get exhausted.
Yeah.
And after a couple of years that I started driving in silence.
And now I all day long I I'm in silence. If my students aren't in the school with me, my school is silent.
But that I I assume that's also somewhat meditative for you.
I love it. It's the best for me.
Bring it down. Bring it down. calm, relaxing, peaceful.
Now, here we're going to we're going to go on to another side here.
Okay.
For me, meditation is not calm and peaceful.
Okay.
Meditation is extremely intense. It's not relaxing. It's tiring.
Like like you mean like actually when you sit down and do meditation, it's intense.
Yeah. I'm I'm focusing. I'm concentrating to a very high degree.
Yeah. You know some people
what?
It's pleasant for you. You enjoy it.
I enjoy the results.
You're making it sound like work.
It is.
Okay.
For me. Okay. Meditation is what you make it. I I I don't think med and meditation isn't the same thing for everybody,
right?
But for me, it's hard.
I guess I'm thinking about relaxation or I don't know. Uh relaxing meditation versus what you're thinking about which is
work personal inner work meditation.
Right. Right.
Focus, concentrate. Um if you want the relaxation one here, I I'll give you a little tip on nonsleep deep relaxation.
Non-sleep deep relaxation. Non
NSDR.
Is that your own uh abbreviation or is that that's that's
not okay. that if you get on uh YouTube
Yeah.
and put in NSDR, a lot of that will be a guided meditation.
Right.
Now, that's relaxing. I do that from time to time.
That sounds like it's funny because makes me think of which would be the opposite of that, which is actually sleeping, rapid eye movement, which is that the deep the REM sleep.
Yeah. Yes. But the REM sleep isn't really very relaxing sleep. Yeah,
it's the the non-rem cycle.
Yeah, when you're when you're not dreaming, that's I think when your body is really relaxing. I'm I'm not sure.
So, in summary for you, relaxation,
meditation is hard work. Music is exhausting
and you prefer a quiet quiet place to be in versus a noisy place.
That's right.
Right.
Yeah. So, I I I'm an introvert. I love being in a a room by myself with no sound.
All right, go go go do that then.
But I like music, don't get me wrong.
No, I I get your message. You don't want to talk to me anymore. I got it. Okay, bye. Especially when you're doing by yourself. That's fine.
Yeah, a lot of people tell me that.
Hey, if you enjoy it, go do your thing.
That's a very very sort of western. If it turns your crank, go for it.
Yeah. Individual. A little individualist. Individual. I think so. Yep.
Nice.
So, I'm I'm going to go and do a little bit of meditation after this.
Excellent, sir.
Okay. Take care. See you later. Bye. Bye.
