Intensive English Listening David's Phone sentence One
Let me tell you about David.
2 days ago, he broke up with his girlfriend.
Yesterday he realized his phone is still at her place.
He's been avoiding it, but today he has no choice.
Over the next 12 weeks we'll follow along in the story one sentence at a time.
And I'll show you exactly what native speakers do to the sounds when they speak.
Here's the first sentence.
Tell me what you hear.
David left his phone at her place 2 days ago.
If you heard lefties and adder, you heard right.
Let me show you what's happening.
Here's the sentence again slower than faster.

English has a heartbeat.
Listen for the rhythm in these sentences.

4 strong beats.
4 strong words.
David, phone, place, days.
Those words carry the main meaning.
All the other words get squeezed between them.
His has three letters in English, it's.
And you think that you could hear them all, but actually it becomes is her changes from her to er.
Let's work backwards.
Is is is is is is is phone.
And Er er utter outer place outer place.
The h disappears.
You hear adder and you think it's one word, but actually it's two at her adder.
Left his.
The his becomes is.
The t in left joins up with the is.
Left his left his left is left is.
Same thing happens with her, which becomes er and before that is at at her at her at her at her place.
Left his phone at her place.
If a word ends in a consonant left like a t, then it joins up with the vowel in the next word is left is, and it sounds like one word.
There's only one cluster to notice.
Foot and to in the word left.
Left foot would be incorrect.
Left, left, and it just goes together in one cluster of consonants left.
Be careful with that one.
Your turn, shadow along with me.
Your voice on top of my voice.
