Lucy’s Journey

Taking the First Step Coffee and Courage On Saturday morning, Lucy sat at her favorite coffee shop. She opened her laptop. "Coding Bootcamps in Southern California," she typed. Many schools appeared. Some taught web design. Others focused on programming. The prices made her nervous. Research Time Lucy made a list. Each bootcamp had different schedules. Some were online. Others met in person. One bootcamp caught her eye. "Learn to code in 12 weeks," it said. The school was only twenty minutes from her apartment. Making Calls Lucy called her parents. "I want to learn to code," she said. Her parents were quiet. Then her dad spoke. "You were always good with computers," he said. "Maybe it's time for a change." Her mom agreed to help with the cost. Campus Visit The bootcamp building was small but clean. Students sat at computers. Their screens showed colorful text. A teacher helped someone fix an error. Lucy watched them work. For the first time, she felt excited instead of scared. The Decision Back home, Lucy looked at her savings account. She thought about her tired job. She thought about Jenny's success. She thought about the students at the bootcamp. Lucy took a deep breath. She opened the application form and started to type.
